The struggle

God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are words we dimly hear:

You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.

Flare up like flame
and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.

Don't let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousnes.

Give me your hand.

~ Rainer Maria Rilke ~

(Rilke’s Book of Hours: Love Poems to God, translated by Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy)

These words are comforting me as my world tumbles in.

London is a dark and lonely place to have your heart broken. It happened to me, same place, same age as you are now. I never thought I'd get through it. Two years later, I've grown a new one that beats stronger and happier than ever. I hope this is of some comfort to you. You will survive and thrive, I feel certain.

Bagger-face is the biggest Melbourne-star... keep your chin up, and you will get through this. You're a bright and beautiful star!!

Hi MD, I have been reading your blog on and off for the past few months. There are times when I feel a resounding connection to some of your thoughts and insight into life (the "beaty and terror" of it). Thank you for your truthful sharing. I felt compelled to comment this time to send you some kindess because life seems to be dealing you that kind of 'take your breath away' sadness. Be kind to yourself right now too. Hope things settle soon.

Kind thoughts coming your way from Melbourne.

Thank you everybody for your kind words. It is somehow comforting to receive such sympathy, even if it comes from virtual "strangers"!

Thank you for taking the time to leave a message for me - it is very much appreciated at this hard time.

I go away for a week or so and learn of this on my return. A sad time for you.

Thinking of you.
