Anatomy of the perfect weekend
I had a super-busy, super-lovely weekend.
Friday night: Roman Holiday and tim tams on the couch. Audrey Hepburn.Cary Grant Gregory Peck (I always get those two good looking men confused). Rome. *the mother of all contented sighs*
Saturday morning: Up and off to yoga class in the warm rain. Afterwards, stretched and calm, a friend and her curly-headed moppet of a 6 y/o pop over for an impromptu brekkie, bearing flowers and raisin bread. Then off to Williamstown, where we enjoy a delicious veggie lunch with friends and play with their 3 crazy dogs, driven inside by the continuing rain. On the way home, after a quick detour through Costco at Docklands, we catch the King Tut exhibition at Melbourne Museum and ogle at the ancient treasures on display.
Sunday: Local coffee and breakfast with a mate. Come back and read the weekend papers on the couch. Wander over to middle bro's to say hello to mum and dad, who have dropped in on their way to the city for a quick cuppa. Lots of hugs and banter. Browse the outlet shops on Bridge Road, where I buy these:
Aren't they amazing?? I don't even want to wear them, I just want to look at them and marvel at their awesomeness.
The shop assistant tells us that we should go to the Spanish fiesta in Fitzroy, he would if he wasn't working, it's such a gorgeous day for it. Why the hell not, we decide, and jump on a tram. 20 minutes later we are caught up in the festive crowd, handing out balloons to gorgeous hispanic kids and being told off by the police for drinking Sangria in the street. We head home before dark, and end up watching The Big Bang Theory/Mythbusters on the couch before falling asleep.
Bliss.
You may have noticed I'm using the royal 'we' for this post. There's a boy in my life right now, and I'm having trouble keeping a lid on the gushing.
Let's just leave it at one word: 'lovely'.

Bikes and boys ahoy
The more observant amongst you may have noticed that I put a blog post up recently, only to take it back down again a few days later. The truth is, I'm sick of hearing myself whinge about singledom/men. As someone* pointed out to me earlier tonight (when I was less drunk than I am now**), I was making lots of generalisations about an entire gender. I really need to stop doing that. People are individuals who happen to be male or female, beyond that - well, it's really not up to me to make sweeping judgements based on a handful of experiences with individuals.
*changes subject apropos of nothing*
You know one side effect of riding a beautiful bike that I really love? The people who start up random conversations with me because of it. It's like having an adorable puppy***; everyone wants to stop a while and exclaim and fuss over it, ask questions about it, and maybe even pet it. Tonight as my friend* and I approached the princess, there was a small group of well-dressed people taking a close look over it, and as I got closer they cooed over my panniers, wanted to know where I got my (knock-off knogg) lights, and asked did I buy the bike from Steve, purveyor of fine bicycles in South Melbourne?**** We all stood around and had a nice little late night (drunken**) chat about how fine it is to ride a bike in Melbourne.
And just like that, I'm feeling more hopeful about the world once more.
Good night!
*you know who you are!
**two glasses of wine and I'm officially off my face.
***God I wish I did have an adorable puppy. Then my life would truly be complete.
****Details may not be correct, see '**' above.

Fantasy Dating: Nerds-Done-Good edition
I'm taking a little break from online dating. The endless cascade of rejections was getting a little disheartening. Seriously, how do people survive this?! You need the skin of a rhino to withstand it, I reckon. It's certainly not for "sensitive young weeds" like myself (and Stephen Fry).
Back to daydreaming, where the men are hot, available and infinitely variable.
Bring on the charming geek-fest!
It's probably best to take your glasses off, Mr. Tempah. You can leave the bow-tie on, though...
Moss from the IT Crowd: the ultimate tech-geek, complete with "reboot" chime.
Um, hello STEVE URKEL?!
Ditto Neville Longbottom.
I wasn't sure about Michael Cera at first - he seemed so weedy in Juno, and like an effeminate Jesse Eisenberg in everything else - but I watched Youth In Revolt last night and I found myself won over by yet another understated dork-at-peace-with-himself performance.

The Hot List - All Australian Edition

Mr. Sean Micallef. Silver. Foxy. Funny surreal, as opposed to funny weird. Currently pantomiming as a game-show host on My Gen, but I'm swooning over old episodes of the Micallef P(r)ogram(me).

Mr. Angus Sampson. Husky-voiced and hairy-faced, with an extremely dry sense of humour. How could I not love him?

Loving Mr. Charlie Pickering's slicked-back hipster look on the 7pm project. And he rides, man (or at least, is prepared to pose with a bike).

Mr. Paul Dempsey, lead singer of Something For Kate. I first fell in love with his haunting, melancholy voice after seeing him play barefoot at the Corner a long time ago. Doesn't smile often, but when he does...

Oh, Hamish. Oh, Andy. Oh, Hamish n' Andy. How could I ever choose between you? The correct answer is, you can both be my boyfriend (see Clement, Jemaine and McKenzie, Bret).

OK this is just getting ridiculous
Even the New Yorker is in on the geek lovin'!!

Ah, graphs and geeks. Just like peanut butter and jam. Or vegemite and cheese, if you're a savoury person.

Chris Rock

"I prefer dark topics when I'm doing comedy. I like to kind of dig myself out of a hole. And I don't take it for granted that people are going to laugh … so if you're up there and no one's laughing, wouldn't it be great to be talking about something interesting?"
Guillaume Nery
Jason Segel

Devouring Freaks and Geeks right now, which I adore. Adore! Look at me with the enthusiasm.
David Eagleman

I love him for his MIND. His amazing, creative, playful mind.
Jack Donaghy

He makes me laugh - and if a man can do that, he's golden. Although, Tina's the writing genius behind 30 Rock, Alex just brings the silver fox to the mix - so I guess I should transfer at least 50% of my crush to her.

Hit grrls and beautiful geeks
You know those super-cool, highly stylised movies that completely glorify violence, that you come out of thinking "yeah, I could totally be an assassin!" and you're picturing yourself skulking around the city after dark, kicking in doors and giving bad guys the death stare before cooly dispatching their asses one by one?
No? Just me then.
Movies that fall into the category of making-you-want-to-be-an-assassin: Kill Bill, Charlie's Angels, Nikita, Pulp Fiction, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Zatôichi, the Bourne series.
But before I saw any of these there was Leon (or The Professional, as it was known in Australia), starring babe-in-the-making Natalie Portman as an orphan child who takes up with her loner neighbour after her family are slaughtered by a maniacal drug lord. Leon is possibly my most favourite film ever; and not just because I was a little in love with Jean Reno and the soundtrack featured Björk. I remember stumbling out of the arthouse cinema at the top end of Bourke street, blinking in the still-bright daylight, feeling different somehow. Indestructable. Cool. A little bit...goth.
And now there is Kick-Ass, the story of a high school geek who decides to become a self-made superhero, kitted out in a green wetsuit, Timberland boots and home-made ninja sticks.
The movie has blown away a whole load of comic book conventions, not least by introducing a 12 year old hit girl called, you guessed it, Hit-Girl. She reminded me a lot of Mathilda in Leon:

There's been a lot of hoo-ha about her use of the c-word in this film. I am not sure if it is my almost complete desensitisation to such language or testimony to Chloe Moretz's pitch perfect performance that it barely registered on my shock-scale.
Pre-teen killing machine uses a few bad words? Whatevs.
Controversy aside, Kick-Ass is great big colourful fun with a dark streak, and treads a fine line between highly stylised action flick and low-fi geekdom. Oh, and he helped:

D:Reamy Prof Cox the Fox rox my world*
Has anyone managed to catch Wonders of the Solar System on BBC2? I can highly recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in astronomy; or those among us who are simply interested in staring at sweet boy-faced men eulogising about something (anything) that they are so excited about that their eyes get all shiny and a sort of glow comes off them.
I mean, I find contemplation of our amazingly complex little solar system and the universe beyond absolutely mind-bottling, but honestly - astronomy's association with ancient, incoherent men who can calculate the elliptical rotation patterns of distant moons but are unable to buy a pair of fitting trousers, heat up a tin of baked beans or replace a pair of spectacles that are clearly beyond repair has made it a no-go zone for many women. Science on that sort of mathematical/astro-physical level just isn't sexy.
Well, get ready to have your preconceptions slapped around the face and covered in glitter:

How d'ya like them space particles?!
Introducing Mr. Brian Cox, formerly of D:Ream (thiiings... can only get better) and latterly passionate crusader for science funding and visitor of schools (sigh!) to raise the profile of the least-cool subject on the curriculum.
Coming from this man, space is cool - literally and pop-culturally. He sprinkled his magic space dust on me and suddenly I am the proud possessor of information about the names of the moons of Jupiter (Io, Ganymede, Callisto and Europa, named for the lovers of the Greek god Zeus). The earth would fit inside Jupiter more than a thousand times. Something about volcanos. Shiny, shiny eyes.
*apologies for the tortured wordplay - I just couldn't resist.

Epic geek crush
Oh my god you guys, I just stumbled across this hottie on last.fm and I think it's true love or something 'cos I honestly feel such a connection to this guy, and I know he doesn't even know, like, who I am or that I even exist or whatever, but I just feel, like, so strongly about it that if we ever did get to meet, he is just going to know, y'know? he is just going to be like, where have you been all my life? and I'll be like, waiting for you, sweetcheeks!

Or not. But Jeremy Warmsley sure is nice to look at, isn't he? Even if he does remind me a little bit of the boy in The Shining).
Oh, and he's not bad to listen to either.

The Hot List – revisited
Some of you may remember a previous blog post in which I listed my top 5 celeb-crushes (as well as a few more who I couldn’t bear to leave out). Being of the eternally fickle female persuasuion, I feel the time has come to update and ammend that list to reflect my current mood, and to acknowledge the general Summery freshness that is currently happening on the wrong side of my window. The unadulterated excitement of wearing unsheathed legs and toe-nail polish has gotten to me, evidently.
I’m sure if I put my mind to it (which I would happily), I could create a constantly shifting league table like those cheeky slappers at the Observer Woman do. But these mere 10 cherry-picked from past and present will have to do for now...

1. Robert Pattinson.
Me and the entire female tween population of the world. There’s just not enough Robert Pattinson to go around.

2. Justin Long
First came to my attention in the brilliant TV series “Ed”. Way up on the geek-o-meter (which can only be a good thing in my book).

3. Ed from “Ed”.
While we’re at it.

3. Friendly Fires
Make me want to jump in the pool.

4. Jason Bateman
Cute, puckish, slightly dishevelled, likes scarves - my ideal man.

5. Stephen Mangan
A face for comedy (especially the eyebrows). Outrageously hilarious as Guy in Green Wing.

6. Chris in the Morning
I wish I could wake up to Chris’ Cali drawl on Radio K-Bear every morning.

7. Aladdin.
Again with the eyebrows. The full extent of my geekiness is revealed.

8. Bernard Fanning from Powderfinger
Charisma personified.

9. Bob Dylan
No wonder he had women falling at his feet back in the day.

10. Ben Wishaw
Can’t wait for Bright Star.

The Hot List*
1. Jemaine Clement & Bret McKenzie
Geeks + facial hair + the funny = volcanic hotness (nb. they only work as a pair).
2. Dave Grohl (circa 1997)
It's the combination of the rocker hair and the goofy smile.
3.Gael Garcia Bernal Benicio Del Toro
Gael has the stunning eyes and exquisite cheekbones, but Del Toro has the hulking presence, the squint, and the dangerous streak.
4. Dylan Moran (as Bernard in Black Books)
Grumpy, surly, Irish, drunk - and all the more lovable for it.
5. Andrew WK
The wildcard - a piano-playing metal-head with brains. Lethal!
Special mention
Robert Pattinson
Me and fifty bajillion pre-teens. Blood-suckers are so hot right now. Too new to make the list, but I'll be keeping an eye on him.
Runners up
6. Jason Schwartzman
Love the eyebrows. And the eyes staring out from beneath them.
7. Keanu Reeves
Ever since Point Break. Sigh.
8. Paul Dempsey
Meloncholy Melbourne rock-god.
9. Zach Braff
Cute, funny, well-written. Ka-ching!
10. Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman
Jesus, I never knew what the fuss was about until I watched this for the first time just recently.
Don't know why you like them, but you do
1. Jon Heder
Girly, goofy, mormon - yet hot.
2. Javier Bardem
See Benicio Del Toro, but taking the danger levels up a notch.
3. Noel Fielding/Vince Noir
I know I'm not alone on this one.
4. Chevy Chase in the 70's
Those sideburns. That smirk. Ouch!
5. Tony Curtis (in Some Like It Hot - confusifying!)
I just love the ridiculous conversation he has with Marilyn on the boat, in between kisses.
*you know, the 5 people you're allowed to cheat on your partner with if said crush was to happen to be in town and you happened to be sitting in the same bar and were drawn towards each other by an IRREPRESSIBLE force of nature. But I seem to have accumulated 16.
Whaddaya gonna do with all the hotness in the world?
